While many people use the term “formative assessment,” it is often used to describe something that is really little more than “early warning summative assessment.” In this breakout session, Dylan Wiliam will explain why assessment for learning is not the same as formative assessment, and why many approaches to formative assessment are of limited effectiveness. The session will also show how teachers can integrate regular minute-to-minute and day-by-day assessment into their teaching, so that what they do is more responsive to their students’ needs, and that their students, in turn, are more engaged.
