Giving Motivating Feedback on Attainment to Students and their Parents is Hard – This is How to do it Better

When a teacher reports how a student is doing it affects their belief systems – their beliefs about current attainment and their beliefs about ability to learn and progress in the future. Some teachers choose to give marks, rankings or grades whilst others prefer to communicate using fuzzy language. Neither of these approaches is value-neutral and both risks undermining motivation to learn under certain circumstances. This talk showcases some of the world’s best experiments and policy evaluations, which together give us both a framework for thinking about a student’s belief systems and an approach to talking about attainment that is most likely to yield motivating results.
